I understand that the athletic department is committed to philosophy, that student-athletes are primarily students, and that all student-athletes must demonstrate behaviours that demonstrate a commitment to maximizing academic success as their first priority. I understand that the athletics department has established the following standards, strategies and policies to maximize the opportunity for student-athletes to achieve their academic goals. I understand that I am obliged to meet these standards: I understand that team unity and team chemistry are key variables for a positive and successful athletics experience. Commitment to the team`s goals is essential, which can sometimes take precedence over individual goals. However, I understand that the athletic department does not subscribe to a team culture based on bullying or mandatory membership in questionable practices, and I demand that all student-athletes be treated fairly by coaches, support staff and teammates. In these circumstances, I hear that student-athletes are expected to show a degree of altruism that promotes the team`s goals. The behaviour of students and athletes influences the public`s perception of institutional ethics, the standards of the athletics department and the character of the student population.
This is why student-athletes are expected to be satisfied with their behaviour, sportiness and self-control. Specifically, creating a culture of personal responsibility requires staff and student-athletes to be assured that there will be no retaliation against those who report violations of governance associations or violations of misconduct guidelines. Staff and student-athletes are expected to raise these concerns with the Director of Athletics or use the institutional mediator to do so.
